Steam Deck owners, forget about wreaking havoc on-the-go.

After more than 9 years since the PC release of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar has added BattleEye to the game’s multiplayer mode to tackle cheaters disturbing the regular players. For those who do not know, BattleEye is a third-party anti-cheat software that is designed to detect unfair practices in online games.

This response, despite being long overdue, is welcomed by many GTA fans. After all, deceiving players used to run rampant in online mode and negatively impact the gaming experience. However, not everyone is thrilled with the changes, and we’re not talking just about the cheaters. Until now, Steam Decks owners could play online without any issues. Now, GTA Online has become unsupported on Steam Deck since SteamOS is run on Linux.

Why can’t I play GTA Online on Steam Deck?

Those who prefer playing on Valve’s handheld device will only be able to play the GTA V Story Mode. The situation is bizarre because BattleEye officially supports Linux, and the Proton setup is supposedly very simple. Furthermore, it seems that Rockstar is aware of the problem but does not intend to fix it. Reddit users contacted the company’s technical support and received a response that GTA V no longer supports Linux, so there is no chance of any changes.

As a result, Grand Theft Auto Online is no longer playable on Steam Deck despite working well prior to the introduction of BattleEye. It is true that you can join a server, but after a few minutes, BattleEye throws you out of the game. Therefore, owners of Valve portable PCs must limit themselves to single-player mode only.

If you still don’t have your copy of GTA V and would like to see if this title deserves such great popularity, we suggest where to buy the game cheapest.
